ReGrained makes snack foods using edible byproducts from other foods and beverages.

A rise in craft beer has created an increase in waste produced during the brewing process. For example, a six pack of beer leaves roughly a pound of grain left behind.

ReGrained uses this grain, along with other edible byproducts, to make healthy, grain-based breakfast bars.

In the U.S., snack bar sales reached $4.29 billion in 2016. And nutrition bars accounted for $2.2 billion of that figure.

Meanwhile, consumers are placing a greater importance on food that's produced without wasting any natural resources.

According to the Speciality Food Association, “upcycled products” — new products created by converting waste materials — ranked No. 2 on a list of top food trends for 2018.

In the past two years, ReGrained has generated nearly $200,000 in sales from grocery stores, Amazon.com, and snack box subscription companies like Mancrates and Imperfect Produce.

The food-tech company has partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop its patent-pending technology. This technology is how ReGrained captures and processes the byproducts from other foods to create snack bars.

ReGrained has earned the support of multiple investors, including Brailla Blu 1877 and Shake it Up! Brands. Both are venture capital funds that provide support to early-stage health food companies.
